Lares were mythical beings that stay within the boundaries of areas that they protect. They are usually dancing youths with a horn cup in one hand and a bowl in another, sometimes with a snake. A shrine to each spirit, called lararium, was featured in every Roman house. Prayers and small offerings to these shrines were a daily activity.
